How can car accidents harm your vision?

Home  |  Blog  |  How can car accidents harm your vision?

Almost all of us know someone who has been involved in a car accident. Injuries are common, and the severity of these can vary drastically.
Injuries that lead you to lose your sight are some of the most significant you could suffer. How do they happen?

Direct trauma to the eye

A car accident may cause the car windscreen (or other car windows) to shatter. If a piece of glass gets into the eyes it can cause serious vision damage or even blindness. There may also be other debris in the air that can hit a driver or passenger directly in the eyes and do serious damage.
Deployment of the vehicle’s airbag is another possible cause of harm to the eyes. The force with which these bags deploy can leave you with swelling around the eyes which makes it hard to see for a while. They could also cause more serious issues such as retinal detachment that need surgery.

Brain damage can lead to vision loss

Your brain controls all of your body including your eyes. If you suffer a traumatic brain injury in a crash, the part that is damaged will dictate which part of the body is affected. While dizziness and blurring are common temporary side effects of a TBI, the harm done to your ability to see and process images could be much longer lasting.
Damage to your eyesight can be devastating. If it occurred due to another driver’s negligence, you have the right to claim compensation for your injuries.
