Exactly how much more likely is a fatal crash for a motorcyclist?

Home  |  Blog  |  Exactly how much more likely is a fatal crash for a motorcyclist?

According to recent statistics, motorcyclists are 29 times more likely to die in a crash than people in cars and trucks. While motorcycles account for only 3% of registered vehicles in the United States, motorcyclists still make up about 14% of all fatalities on the road. The most common cause of motorcycle accidents: the other driver failing to yield to the motorcyclist’s right of way.

Why the risk is higher

It may go without saying, but motorcyclists are at an increased risk of serious injury because they don’t have a protective frame around them. Obviously, cars and trucks provide such a frame. Motorcycles also don’t have seatbelts. However, wearing a helmet and other protective gear can greatly reduce the risk of serious injury.

The type of motorcycle matters

Statistics show that motorcyclists who ride supersport motorcycles are four times more likely to suffer a fatal injury than motorcyclists who ride other types of bikes. Why? Supersport bikes tend to have more power and reach higher speeds. These motorcycles are especially popular among younger riders.

It’s important that all motorcyclists take proper safety precautions, and that other motorists keep their eyes open for motorcycles. Any motorcyclist who suffers an injury after being hit by another driver should get checked out by a doctor. If you were riding a motorcycle and were injured by a negligent driver, you may also need to look into your legal options for getting all the compensation you need for medical expenses and other costs resulting from the crash.
